After my first sleep study, the doctor diagnosed me with obstructive sleep apnea. Next Thursday, I will be having a titration study. But I am not pleased that I will have to wear a nasal mask during the titration. I have been a mouth breather since I was little and have always had sinus congestion which has made it hard to breathe through my nose. In my opinion I think it is not right to force someone who is a mouth breather to wear a nasal mask if they cannot breathe through their nose. What is your opinion about this? What should I do?

How do you know they will give you a nasal mask? Doctor? If they do give you a nasal mask they should recognise the problem pretty quickly.

PAP Mask: Practically tried them all.
PAP Machine: Use Phillips Respironics System One APAP with Aflex for mask testing
Humidifier: None
Pressure Setting: When testing, I use APAP with a range of 5-10

I'm with LSAT. How do you know they're going to give you a nasal mask? Even if they do, there isn't much harm in trying it until it is clear that it's a failure. If it is, move on to a FFM.

I hope they don't "force" you to do it. There is a big difference between trying to encourage you to use one vs. forcing you to use one. :)

The sleep doctor told me that sleep technicans usually have people wear the nasal mask during the titration. If they have trouble breathing through the nasal mask and suddenly open their mouths to breath, then they will have the people wear the full face mask.

So, there's your "out". Just open your mouth and breath through it instead of the nasal mask... Then they'll switch you to an FFM.

Why do you need an *out*?

I've heard stories from people that said they were always mouth breathers, but after trying a nasal mask, with the pressure assist, they could breath through their noses.

Try it, see what happens.... go from there.

Talk to your sleep tech while he/she is getting you all set up with the wires and everything. Tell them your issues, your history, your concerns. They may put a nasal pillow or nasal cushion mask on you and turn on the machine just so you have the experience of it, then switch you straight to a FFM. I'm a mouth breather with nasal congestion for the last 15-20 years, but with the right amount of humidity my nasal passages open right up and I can breathe through my nose using a nasal cushion/pillow. And added benefit I'm usually able to breathe through my nose most of the day (I also take a Claritin-D everyday).

I just came home this morning from the sleep titration study and I ended up wearing the full face mask because the nasal mask made it hard to breathe through my nose. The full face mask that I was wearing was very comfortable while sleeping on my back and side. The only thing about the mask that I did not like was the forehead strap.

There are a number of newer FFMs that don't have forehead stuff.
