Hi everyone,

I was having trouble with mask leaking, but switched to a smaller philips Dreamwear mask - size small, and it wasn't leaking. The problem I have is severe neck pain and TMJ.

I felt I need a full face mask because I do mouth breath and I get congested, but I can't afford to have my neck problem worsen.

The problem is that the bottom straps that go around the neck pull a bit and it causes me increased pain in my neck. I also find that having the mask on my mouth and face tight enough not to leak causes pressure on my jaw.

I'd appreciate advice.

I was thinking of buying a philips Dreamwear nose only mask, and seeing if I could use a chin strap to keep my mouth from opening, but I don't know if that will hurt my neck, and I'm not even sure you can use a chin strap with a nose mask.

I do see mouth tape though on Amazon.

I can not use an oral device because I have a bite guard that I must wear at all times that was made to correct my bite.

I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

PS. My equipment provider has no suggestions other than switching to a nose only mask, and I don't have a sleep specialist. The doctor who ordered the sleep study is not a sleep specialist.

I would suggest tape first over a chin strap. I am afraid that the pressure of the chin strap might aggravate the TMJ issues.

As long as you can comfortably breathe through your nose during the night there's a good chance you can use the tape to deter mouth breathing.

And to be honest...and speaking from someone with first hand experience with neck issues due to the straps on full face masks.
Sometimes a little mouth breathing (should it happen) is a better compromise than dealing with the neck issues.
Meaning that you might not always do severe mouth breathing to the point of really making a big impact on your therapy.
It might be a better option to have 10 minutes in large leak than major neck or TMJ issues.

Thank you Pugsy! That's advice I think I can live with. I ordered the Phillips nose pillow. I realized I can use the same frame and it was only $15 on Amazon to get the nose only mask piece, and I believe that it's supposed to snap into the frame the same as the full face mask.

I've been thinking about the tape, and I think that may not be a good solution after all because I need to drink through the night.

I'm wondering if I can get a chin strap and use it kind of loosely so my mouth doesn't open widely enough to breath through it. What do you think?

The only other option I can see is to just get the benefit whenever I'm not breathing through my mouth.

While the frame is the same for the DreamWear full face mask and the nasal cushions or nasal pillows...the headgear itself isn't. The stretchy part that is sort of adjustable.

I would wait to see if I even needed a chin strap first...but that's me.
If you find yourself mouth leaking too much then yes..you can get a chin strap that is adjustable and wear it loosely but to be honest...even if worn tightly they don't always stop the mouth breathing.
Clench your teeth shut...open lips...breathe. See what I mean?

Chin straps aren't supposed to be vise grip tight to clamp the jaws together because it hurts and it won't stop mouth breathing anyway because all a person has to do is open the lips and breathe even with the jaws tightly held together.

Now if you only need a gentle reminder to not open the mouth or have the lower jaw drop open then some sort of chin strap might help out.

I would go with cheap substitute first though...I got a headband at WalMart. Or even a sweatband worn vertical instead of horizontal.
Or maybe something even like this that someone discovered on a different forum.

Scroll down a bit an look to see how forum member Jay Aitchsee worked a Scunci headband.

Thanks Pugsy - Do I understand you correctly? I think you're talking about the fabric piece with straps that goes around the neck being different?

I see that I can just remove it and it appears that it's not needed to wear with the nasal pillow.

So am I correct thinking that I don't need to buy anything else besides the Dreamwear nasal pillows to make it work with the headgear/frame I already have from the full face mask?

Full face DreamWear headgear...look at it.
https://www.amazon.com/DreamWear-Full_F ... ref=sr_1_5
It will NOT work with the nasal cushion or nasal pillow insert simply by removing that lower strap...at least mine wouldn't.
I have this mask...both full face and the gel pillows and under the nose cushion.

This is the headgear for the gel pillows or the under the nose cushion
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... p-headgear

You can try to do what you are thinking and if you can get it to stay put....more power to you but Respironics offers the 2 headgear styles for the DreamWear line for more reasons than just make more money.

The frame is the same...that's the part that goes around the top of your head and down your cheeks. The frame works with the nasal cushion, full face mask cushion/insert and the gel pillows.

Thank you so much for explaining. I purchased the headgear on Amazon - I can't wait to try it.
